Brainstorm is an AI brainstorming skill that runs a structured brainstorming session on any topic — generating ideas for products, projects, to-dos, campaigns, names, problems and decisions. Guides you question by question, produces many ideas with proven brainstorming techniques, and converges critically to a reasoned shortlist.

What this skill does

  • Clarifies first, via questions, what this is about and what a good outcome is — one question per step, with clickable options (native selection UI where available).
  • Generates many wide-ranging ideas in the divergence phase using proven techniques (SCAMPER, How-might-we, analogies, reversal, first principles, Crazy 8s …).
  • Converges critically: clusters, scores against your success criteria (impact/effort, RICE, NUF) and names assumptions & risks openly.
  • Sharpens the top idea with a pre-mortem and delivers concrete next steps (step · owner · first result).
  • Works across domains: product, business, marketing, content, names, projects, to-dos, decisions, events, personal goals.

Description

Brainstorm is a skill for guided idea generation — it runs a structured brainstorming session question by question, generates ideas broadly with proven brainstorming techniques and then converges critically to a reasoned shortlist and next steps. Instead of throwing one "best" idea at you, this skill facilitates a real brainstorming session: it first clarifies, via questions, what this is about and what a good outcome would be, then generates many wide-ranging ideas in a divergence phase using proven ideation techniques (SCAMPER, How-might-we, first principles), and converges critically afterwards — clustering, scoring against your criteria, and naming assumptions and risks openly. Finally it sharpens the top idea and delivers concrete next steps. Works across any domain: product ideas, business, marketing, content, names, projects, to-dos, decisions, events, personal goals.

Examples

What it does not do

  • Does not dump ideas when the goal is unclear — one clarifying question first.
  • No sugar-coating: scores critically and names risks & assumptions.
  • Invents no market numbers or evidence; assumptions are flagged as such.
  • Delivers no finished artifact (design, copy, plan) — it hands off to specialized skills for that.

Recommended runtime
Any capable chat model; especially smooth in tools with interactive selection/question elements (Claude Code and others), where the skill uses clickable options.
Modes
Frame the goal · Generate ideas (divergence) · Cluster & score (convergence) · Sharpen & next steps
Inputs
A vague wish ("let’s brainstorm") · A concrete topic with goal/constraints · Existing ideas to build on · A problem or a decision
Output format
Guided questions with clickable options → ideas grouped by direction → a scored shortlist with assumptions/risks → a next-steps checklist.

No AI tool? Paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini and use the method right away.

This skill ships no scripts, so the prompt carries its full method.

Installing is the full version — it triggers automatically, runs its scripts and loads references as needed. As a chat prompt you drive the method by hand.

Note

Strongest when you state the goal and constraints (or answer the first multiple-choice question). In tools with interactive selection (e.g. Claude Code) the skill uses clickable options, otherwise numbered ones.

Changelog

  • v1.1.022.06.2026Platform-native output: now actively uses your platform's native formatting — tables, checklists, code blocks and clickable/button options, with a numbered fallback on non-interactive platforms. Plus internal metadata that prepares the upcoming agent builder.
  • v1.0.018.06.2026First release: domain-agnostic brainstorming facilitator per AUTHORING v2 — question-led (one question per step, native selection where possible), 4-phase flow (frame → diverge → converge → sharpen), references/ with techniques/domains/question banks + checklist, internal evals, cross-links.

Frequently asked questions

What does Brainstorm do?

Brainstorm is an AI brainstorming skill that runs a structured brainstorming session on any topic — generating ideas for products, projects, to-dos, campaigns, names, problems and decisions. Guides you question by question, produces many ideas with proven brainstorming techniques, and converges critically to a reasoned shortlist.

How do I brainstorm properly and come up with good ideas?

Brainstorm guides you through the brainstorming process question by question: first clarify the goal, then generate ideas broadly with proven techniques, and finally converge critically to a shortlist. That way you come up with not just many ideas, but viable ones.

What are the best brainstorming techniques to generate more ideas?

Brainstorm applies proven ideation techniques — SCAMPER, How-might-we, analogies, reversal, first principles — to produce many approaches from your topic instead of stopping at the first obvious ones. You don't need to know the methods yourself; the skill applies them in a guided way.

How do I pick the best ideas out of a long list?

After generating ideas broadly, Brainstorm converges critically to a reasoned shortlist and concrete next steps. So you don't end up with a long list — you know what to start with and why.

How do I use Brainstorm?

Brainstorm is a SKILL.md in the open agentskills.io standard: install it with one command (npx) or download it and add it to your AI tool — Claude (Projects), ChatGPT (Custom GPT), Cursor, Copilot, Gemini CLI and more. No code needed.
